At Foster & Heanes, we love the summer months — perfect for scenic drives and classic car shows! But while the sun might be great for a day out, it’s not always so kind to your vehicle.
Prolonged exposure to UV rays, heat, and contaminants like tree sap and bird droppings can cause lasting damage to your car’s paintwork.
Here’s what to watch out for — and how to keep your car looking (and feeling) cool this summer.
Sun, Heat & Your Car’s Paintwork
You might not realise it, but the sun’s UV rays can gradually fade and oxidise your car’s paint. Over time, this can lead to dull, chalky finishes — especially on darker-coloured vehicles. And if your car spends a lot of time parked outdoors, the risk increases.
Our advice:
- Use a quality wax or paint sealant – This adds a protective layer that shields paint from UV rays and gives your car that showroom shine.
- Consider a car cover – A breathable, UV-resistant cover can do wonders if you don’t have access to a garage or shaded parking.
- Wash regularly – Dust, pollen and air pollutants can “bake” onto the paint in strong sun, so give your car a gentle clean every couple of weeks.
The Trouble with Tree Sap & Bird Droppings
Tree sap and bird droppings might seem like minor annoyances, but when they land on a hot car, they can quickly cause real damage.
Both are acidic, and in the heat, they bake into the clear coat of your car's paint — often leaving permanent etching or marks if not cleaned off quickly.
Here’s how to protect your car:
- Avoid parking under trees where possible — even brief exposure can leave a sticky mess in summer.
- Clean up fast! Use a gentle automotive cleaner or warm, soapy water to remove sap and droppings as soon as you spot them.
- Keep a microfibre cloth and waterless wash spray in your boot for quick clean-ups on the go.
Stay Cool: Don’t Forget Your Aircon Service
Summer isn’t just tough on your paintwork — it can be tough on your comfort, too. If your air conditioning isn’t blowing cold or feels weak, it’s likely time for a re-gas.
Most manufacturers recommend re-gassing your aircon every 2 years to keep it running efficiently. At Foster & Heanes, we can check your system, re-gas it, and make sure you're breathing cool, clean air on every journey.
Signs your aircon needs attention:
- Weak airflow or no cold air
- Bad odours coming from vents
- Windows not demisting properly
- Strange noises when A/C is turned on
