There are a number of steps that will help you to preserve the life of your car’s engine and ensure your vehicle runs smoothly.

Here are some simple tips to keep your engine free from problems.

Drive your vehicle frequently

Cars that are driven regularly function better because oil is circulated when the vehicle is moving. If your car is left inactive for a long period, it can result in loss of engine performance.

If, for any reason, you’re unable to take the car out for a drive, it helps to run the engine when the vehicle is stationary on the driveway. This will keep engine parts moving and lubricated.

Try to avoid potholes

This is easier said than done on certain roads, but always try to avoid potholes if you can.

Large potholes can cause damage to your vehicle’s engine and other internal and external parts of the car. If you can’t avoid potholes take care when driving over them – high speeds will potentially cause more damage and stress on the engine than if you proceed with caution.

Driving on rough terrain will also cause your engine to work harder in order to keep moving forward – and this will make it less fuel efficient.

Don’t stop or start sharply

Engines prefer a smooth transition. Sharp braking or accelerating can put pressure on the engine and on your tires. Try and change your driving habits if you’re a repeat offender.

You can’t always avoid moving off quickly or having to perform an emergency stop. However, persistent hard braking and accelerating can impact your engine. Consistent and careful movement will help keep your engine in good health.

Don’t overload your vehicle

Excessively overloading your car can affect the performance of your engine. If you consistently carry heavy loads over a long period of time, it can cause degradation.

Try and lighten the load when you can – or make two trips with smaller loads. Overloaded cars are bad for fuel economy, and you’re putting considerable pressure on your tires.

Service your vehicle on a regular basis

Cars have to undergo an annual MOT to ensure they’re roadworthy. And they should also undergo regular servicing. Taking care of the general upkeep of your vehicle is the best way to preserve the life of its engine.

A full service will ensure all the critical elements of the engine are inspected and checked for performance. Rather than taking your car into the garage when a problem arises, it’s better to prevent issues from occurring in the first place (and far less expensive).

Routine inspection and maintenance are recommended for the long-term health of an engine. Most modern cars have dashboard signals to alert you when your vehicle’s service is due.

Finally, if you notice any changes in your engine, such as unusual noises or smells, or any leaks, don’t delay in taking your car to a garage. Ignoring warning signs can result in extremely costly repairs.
