What are the most reliable used car makes and models?

 

If you’re planning to buy a used car, the latest Driver Power survey from Auto Express 1 reveals the top ten most reliable used cars based on data they’ve collated.

 

 

The annual survey is compiled from feedback from thousands of car owners who complete the Driver Power survey. In a series of questions covering different areas, they’re asked to give their opinion on their cars, including running costs and the vehicle’s driving performance.

 

Statistical weightings are applied, and a percentage figure is calculated.

 

 

For the second year running, first place in the survey went to the Lexus GS Mk4, which was manufactured from 2012 to 2018.

 

This executive saloon scored 97.81%, ranking highly for its audio system, driving pleasure, interior and exterior quality, engine sound and acceleration. 

 

In second place was the Lexus RX Mk4 with a score of 96.24%, and in third place was the Lexus RX Mk3 with 96.14%. While the Mk4 scored a bit more for reliability, the Mk3 scored higher for practicality and comfort.

 

Also featured in the top ten were the Lexus NX Mk1 at number four, with a score of 95.64%, receiving good feedback for reliability. At number nine was the Lexus CT Mk1 with 94.70% and top-10 scores for its exterior style, running costs and reliability.

 

 

The Toyota Prius Mk4, manufactured from 2016 until the present, took the number four spot with a score of 95.91%. This hybrid came top for fuel economy and scored highly for acceleration, smoothness, and quietness.

 

The Skoda Karoq Mk1 was the only non-Japanese car in the top ten and scored 95.14%. This SUV ranked highly for reliability, front-seat comfort, rear legroom, seating flexibility, user-friendly switchgear, infotainment, servicing costs, value for money, handling, and safety system functionality. It was awarded Auto Express’s Used Car of the Year in its 2022 Used Car Awards.

 

The Subaru Outback Mk5, which was manufactured between 2015 and 2021, scored 95.01% and took the seventh spot. It scored highly for reliability and came first overall for seating versatility, with second place for boot space, rear legroom, and child-friendly features. 

 

In eighth place was the Subaru XV Mk2, manufactured from 2018 to the present. Scoring 94.92%, it ranked highly for reliability, road handling, safety features, and exterior fit and finish.

 

In tenth place was the Honda CR-V Mk4 with 93.90% - thanks to high scores for front-seat comfort, rear legroom, and child-friendly features.

 

 

For a different perspective, car warranty provider, WarrantyWise 2, used a methodology based on the lowest-rated cars in terms of claims recorded by warranty experts.
