Following mounting pressure from industry bodies and road safety organisations, the Government has announced that the MOT Extension initiative, launched in March, is to end on 1st August.
This means that mandatory MOT testing will resume on 1st August. The extension still applies to all MOT certificates due to expire before 1st August, but thereafter, drivers must get their vehicle MOT tested within a year of their last test.
Initially the Government planned to allow this extension to run until March 2021, but the decision to offer this extension did result in the closure of many garages. The premature end of the extension will be welcome news not just for garages, but also for the many road users who are currently on the road with at least 1 million unroadworthy cars.
First MOT due
The extension applies to cars, motorcycles, light vans and other light vehicles who have their first MOT Test due between 30th March and 31st July 2020.
MOT due on or after August 2020
Your MOT certificate will not be extended if your vehicle’s MOT expires on or after 1st August 2020. You must book your MOT as usual. You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. For example if your MOT runs out on 2nd August, you can get an MOT to keep the same renewal date for next year after 3rd July.
Not sure of your MOT Test date?
Since MOT computerisation, it is now possible to check your car’s MOT history online. If you are not sure when your MOT is due, you can check it here https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history
When you should not take your vehicle for an MOT
If you are self-isolating or you have been advised to shield as you are extremely vulnerable from coronavirus, Foster & Heanes will collect your vehicle, carry out the MOT and return it to you. There is no charge to local customers for this collection and delivery service.
Free Re-Test within 10 days
Many garages charge for MOT re-tests, but with us it’s FREE! Should your car fail the MOT we can undertake the repairs, or you can choose to get the repairs done elsewhere. Either way, as long as you return the car within 10 working days, we will re-test the vehicle for free.
